About Caryn

My dental hygiene professional life has provided me with many opportunities to provide health education and care to clients, teach dental hygiene students, consult with product manufacturers, serve on various boards and participate in every level of leadership in the American Dental Hygienist’s Association (ADHA).

I graduated from North Dakota State School of Science with my dental hygiene degree in 1971 and have been practicing my profession ever since. My clinical experience has included private general dental offices and periodontal specialty practices. I was a part-time adjunct faculty member at Truckee Meadows Community College dental hygiene program for several years (2000-05). Waterpik Corporation hired me along with other regional dental hygienists to represent the company at large conventions. (2007-10). Nevada’s Governor Sandoval appointed me to the Nevada State Board of Dental Examiners in 2012-15, and I remain a dental hygiene clinical examiner for regional testing agencies.

I have lived and worked in South Dakota, where I grew up, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho and New Mexico. In 1972, I moved to the Reno/Sparks area and became involved with the Nevada Dental Hygienist’s Association (NDHA) by serving in many of the elected officer positions. As my family moved to several states for my husband’s work, I remained involved in the local chapters of my professional association.

My children and I returned to Reno/Sparks in 1991 and my involvement in the NDHA once again is more participatory as I have served in most of the NDHA elected positions. I took the step up to leadership in ADHA and was elected District 12 Trustee to the ADHA Board of Trustees, with the responsibility of representing 6 western states (2002-06). Leadership skill-building was an integral part of my journey to run for ADHA Vice-President, President-elect, and President (2007-11). Active involvement in my professional association has always been extremely important to me as I continue to grow and develop not only my clinical skills but my personal leadership abilities.

Future Smiles embodies the core values of my profession, to educate, to serve and to provide quality care in a safe, effective, cost-efficient environment. It is a distinct privilege to serve a member of the Future Smiles Board of Directors.
